Why RCD Protection Can Save Lives !!

What IS an RCD ?

An RCD or residual current device is a life saving device which is designed to prevent a FATAL electric shock should you come into contact with something LIVE such as a bare live wire. It can also provide protection against electrical fires.

RCDs offer a level of personal protection than an ordinary fuse or circuit breaker cannot provide.

What Does an RCD actually do ?

An RCD is a sensitive safety device that cuts out the electricity supply if a fault is detected. The RCD is designed to protect against the risks of electrocution and fire caused by earth faults, for example if you cut through a cable when mowing the lawn or cut the cable while trimming the hedge and then inadvertently touched the exposed live wire. Also where a faulty appliance overheats causing electric current to flow to earth.

How does the RCD work ?

An RCD constantly monitors the electric current flowing through one or more circuits it is protecting and if it detects electricity flowing down an unintended path such as through a person who has come into contact with a live part, The RCD will switch the circuit off very quickly significantly reducing the risk of serious injury or even death.

What are the main types of RCD ?

RCDs can help protect you from electric shock in potentially dangerous areas such as bathrooms, Gardens, Garages and sheds.

There are various types of Industrial and Domestic types of RCD that can be used to ensure you are always as safe as possible.

Fixed RCD

These are installed in the Consumer Unit ( Fuse Board ) and can provide protection to individual or groups of circuits.

A fixed RCD provides the highest level of protection as it will protect all wiring and sockets within the circuit as well as any protected appliance.

Socket+ Outlet RCD

These are special Socket outlets with an RCD built into them that can be used in place of a regular indoor socket.

Single Indoor Socket with RCD Protection
Single Indoor Socket with RCD Protection

This Type of RCD Socket provides protection only to the person in contact with the equipment including the lead that is plugged into the socket.

IP66 Socket Outlet RCD

These special socket-outlets also have built in RCD protection like the above but are IP66 Rated which means they can be installed and used outdoors.

These sockets are ideal for plugging in lawn mowers, Hedge trimmers, Electric barbecues, Pressure washers, Garden heaters or external lighting.

Portable RCDs

These will plug into any standard socket-outlet.

These are very useful when neither fixed nor RCD socket-outlets are available.

As with the socket-outlets they provide protection to the person in contact with the equipment.

RCD Plugtop

Ideal for replacing the standard 13a Plugtop on power tool or garden tools.
